Welsh Real Tennis Association

The Welsh Real Tennis Association was formed in December 2024 by a group of Real Tennis enthusiasts with varying Welsh connections.

Beforehand to gain the level of interest several fixtures had been arranged against Scotland, Ireland and Sealand all of which brought a sense of excitement, different than a club match, as well as a degree of National  fervour.  This was no more felt than when we met at Moreton Morrell in the spring of 2024, when the daffodils had erupted on the banks of the club entrance and Welsh flags were fluttering.  To go on court and sing "Mae Hen Wlad Fy Ndadau" in the acoustically balanced environment of a Real Tennis court brought a tingling down the spine.  Since then, needless to say we now regularly sing the Welsh National Anthem at our fixtures.

We have been most fortunate that the court at Moreton Morrell in Warwickshire, has kindly agreed for us to use it as our ‘home’ court; geographically Bristol RTC is closer, but a short trip across Worcestershire and Herefordshire quickly leads us to Monmouth.

Our aim is widen the camaraderie felt by Real Tennis players and to share in the fellowship of being Welsh or having lived in Wales for a significant period of time, to feel a degree of affinity.....Hiraeth.  There is much to be said to be giving a nod to our Celtic forebearers which has been embraced by the Celtic Challenge matches first started by the Scottish and Irish.  Battle on court and a drink in the bar is how wars should be fought.  Good health to the beautiful game of Real, Royal or Court Tennis.
